Fatal auto crashes in construction zones are up in 2024

by | Apr 3, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Fatal auto crashes in construction zones have seen a concerning uptick in 2024. This chilling news stems from recent data provided by the Ohio State Highway Patrol Work Zone Dashboard.

The dashboard, which offers real-time statistics from 2019 to the present, reveals a stark reality. The number of auto accidents in construction zones during the early months of 2024 has more than doubled compared to the same period in 2023.

Changing traffic patterns poses risks

Construction zones often necessitate alterations in traffic patterns, such as lower speed limits, reduced lanes and different lane configurations. Unfortunately, not all drivers adapt seamlessly to these changes. Whether due to distraction, disregard for traffic signs or failure to adjust driving behavior, accidents including minor collisions and catastrophic crashes can occur.

Multiple vehicles involved

These accidents are not limited to a specific vehicle type. Cars, trucks and motorcycles alike can become entangled in the chaos of a construction zone collision. With multiple vehicles navigating through altered traffic routes, the potential for accidents increases substantially.

Be a cautious driver

To mitigate the risks associated with construction zones, drivers must exercise due caution. Before embarking on a journey, it is wise to check for any ongoing construction along the planned route. By doing so, drivers can anticipate potential traffic changes and plan their trips accordingly.

Avoid rushing

Rushing through a construction zone can amplify the likelihood of accidents. By allowing ample time for the journey and avoiding the urge to speed through altered traffic conditions, drivers can contribute to safer roads for themselves and others.

As of April 2024, there were 3,115 work zone crashes resulting in property damage year to date. Construction zone accidents are unfortunately common and highly damaging, so it is important to contact a lawyer to get professional assistance if you or someone you know becomes injured or killed in an accident with another vehicle in a construction zone.
