What’s tough on the outside and soft and squishy on the inside? Answer: a motorcyclist.
This is one of the slogans released as part of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, a nationwide campaign that takes place each May.
For some in Ohio, it has come too late. Police figures show over 1,900 motorcyclists have already suffered accidents in Ohio this year. As the weather turns summer-like, more and more motorcyclists are wheeling their bikes out of the garage to enjoy the freedom of the highways.
“When motorcycles and other vehicles collide, it is usually the other (non-motorcycle) driver who violates the motorcyclist’s right of way.” That is what The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), who runs the campaign, says.
Their campaign works on two levels: Firstly, to raise driver awareness of motorcyclists, and secondly, to make motorcyclists aware that a lot of drivers do not see them.
Tips for drivers include:
- Give a motorcycle space.
- Know and check your blind spots.
- Allow a motorcyclist the whole lane.
- Take extra care when turning left.
- Stay within the speed limits.
- Do not drink and drive.
Tips for motorcyclists include:
- Take a training course.
- Wear bright clothing.
- Stay within the speed limits.
- Do not drink and ride.
If you are an Ohio motorcyclist, you will know just how short the riding season can be. So get out there and enjoy it. If you want to enjoy an accident-free summer, remember, as far as some drivers are concerned, when you are on your motorcycle, you may as well be invisible.
