How does a brain injury change somebody’s everyday life?

Any severe injury that you can sustain in a car accident can potentially affect you for the rest of your life. But perhaps no part of your body is as vulnerable to severe damage as your brain.

If you get a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a crash, your life could be changed forever. Unlike many bodily injuries, it can be hard to predict how long it will take for a TBI to heal — or if you will ever fully recover. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only about 26 percent of individuals who received inpatient treatment for a severe TBI have an improved condition five years later. Another 30 percent are in a worse condition after five years, and 22 percent see their condition remain the same. Tragically, the remaining 22 percent die within five years of their TBI.

Changes to how you live your life can be permanent

Unfortunately, a moderate to severe TBI is often a life-altering event. It can affect your physical and cognitive abilities, your emotions, even how you behave. Depending on your symptoms, you might have to stop working, and everyday tasks you once did easily may become impossible without help. Family or professional home aides can help, but often at the cost of your independence, privacy and dignity.

Whether you are the one living with a major TBI or you are a loved one caring for a TBI victim, you know how expensive this type of disability can be. If the injury happened because of someone else’s negligence, Ohio law allows you to seek rightful compensation through a personal injury lawsuit.
