We are proud to announce that Kayla Marsh, a pre-law student at the University of Toledo, is the recipient of The Stuckey Firm, LLC’s 2025 Scholarship.
Kayla’s dedication to the legal profession, her academic achievements, and her commitment to justice make her an outstanding choice for this year’s $2,500 scholarship award.
About the Scholarship
The Stuckey Firm, LLC, established this scholarship to support students who demonstrate a passion for the law and a commitment to making a difference in their communities. The $2,500 scholarship is awarded annually to help students cover the costs of their education and focus on achieving their career goals.
This year’s scholarship asked applicants to reflect on the importance of trial by jury and whether this right should be expanded or restricted in injury cases.
Students were required to submit a short video response, citing relevant sources to support and strengthen their arguments.
We Are Committed to Holding Negligent Parties Accountable and Putting Your Needs First.
Advocating for Personal Injury Victims’ Right to Trial by Jury
In her short video response, Kayla discussed the importance of the Seventh Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees the right to a jury trial in civil cases. She emphasized how this right ensures fairness and accountability by allowing personal injury victims to have their cases heard by a jury of their peers.
Kayla referenced peer-reviewed research on jury size and diversity, citing insights from the American Bar Association (ABA). She noted how larger, more diverse juries bring a range of perspectives to deliberations, which leads to fairer and more balanced outcomes for injury victims.
She pointed out that reducing jury sizes or limiting access to jury trials could undermine the justice system and harm victims who rely on juries to understand and value their experiences.
Drawing From Personal Experience
Her passion for the topic stems from her personal experience working at a personal injury law firm since high school. Kayla explained that being immersed in these cases gave her a unique perspective on how essential juries are in ensuring fair outcomes for victims.
“I’ve been surrounded by the kinds of cases where juries can play a large role, and where taking them away or restricting them could seriously impact those cases,” she said.
Seeing firsthand how jury trials give victims a chance to have their stories heard and their experiences valued made the topic especially meaningful to her.
This experience also pushed her to think about what a fair trial truly looks like and how the structure and accessibility of juries can shape justice.
Kayla also credits her boss, Lori, as one of her strongest inspirations. Since high school, Kayla has worked with Lori, an attorney who has been both a mentor and a role model to her.
“Her passion for her work, the way she supports her clients, and how she always finds time to uplift the people around her have left a huge impression on me. She’s played a major role in shaping my career goals and has helped me grow both professionally and personally,” Kayla shared.
Academic Pursuits, Extracurricular Activities, and Community Involvement
Kayla is a Political Science major with a minor in Criminal Justice and a concentration in Pre-Law at the University of Toledo. Her academic success is complemented by her active involvement in campus organizations and activities.
Kayla serves as president of the Ohio Innocence Project-U Chapter and the Political Science Student Association, roles that showcase her leadership and dedication to advocacy. She also participates in mock trial competitions and Model EU teams, where she has honed her critical thinking and public speaking skills.
She volunteers for the Ohio Coalition to End Qualified Immunity and interns for Judge Lindsay Navarre at the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas. These experiences highlight her commitment to justice and her desire to make a positive impact on the legal system.
“Everything he did was over and beyond what we would expect an attorney to do. He made it so that we didn’t have any worries.”.
